The Battle of Gettysburg
The battle was clearly a Union victory, as Lee and his forces retreated on July 4th. The battle was extremely important, it seemed as though this was the turning point that meant the Union would win. Both sides suffered heavy casualties, the Union had 23,000 and the Confederacy had 28,000. Some interesting things about this battle are the fact that General Lee had a heart attack the night before it started, which some people will say is the reason he made bad decisions during the battle. In addition, a 70 year old former soldier named John Burns lived in Gettysburg, and heard the shots of the battle and rushed in to join the fight. Surprisingly, he did get shot 3 times but lived for another 7 years before dying at the age of 77, a very long life for someone in that time period. In a pretty lame first impression, George Mead was a new general who had 0 confidence. He was very sloppy at organization, as almost half of his army barely engaged the enemy. In addition, he really screwed up his resume when his forces didn't chase down the retreating southerners, which he was repeatedly humiliated for.
