The Battle of Kennesaw Mountain
The Battle of Kennesaw Mountain took place on June 27 1864. It took place by the Kennesaw Mountain located right here in Cobb County. The two generals that were in this battle were: The Northern General William T. Sherman and Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston. The two sides went in with the Army of Tennessee and the Military Division of Mississippi.
This battle was interesting because Sherman had just fought a battle on the 22nd and he went into this battle 5 days later on the 27th. Sherman sent his troops in after a military bombardment. Johnston decided to go into the battle with a frontal attack.
This battle didn't have a clear winner but Sherman did have a lot of casualties. The North lost about 3,000 and they South lost a lower 1,000. The significance of this battle is it was the battle that happened right here where we live, and it's a battle that lead up to the burning of Atlanta when Sherman went on "Sherman's March".
